The temperance movement in the church is aberrant. It is founded on a world view, not on God’s word. The church responds to civil pressures to change their doctrine to quell the complaints of it’s people. The church never aligns with the worlds order of life but the church is to be salt and light, flavoring that which has no flavor. This is the mystery of the Gospel.
Matt. 24:9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.
Luke 6:22 Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake.
John 7:7 The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.
John 15:18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
1John 3:13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

The church and temperance; pg 108 and forward. You will notice that before the mid 1800’s, this was never a consideration in the church.
